Lisa Dalhuijsen

Hello, my name is Lisa and I'm a designer and web developer specialized in data visualization and maps. I turn data into beautiful visualizations and user-friendly experiences. I merge data, design and narrative so you can communicate effectively, reveal insights and make informed decisions.

Some people are surprised to hear I do design and development, but I really love both. I adore the inexplicable beauty of design, and at the same time I enjoy solving technical puzzles by coding. With both skills under one roof I can easily recognise the possibilities of interactive media, and I always have a good overview of the process.

Design

I’m good at structuring and analysing data and information, and translating it to something visual. Having a strong knowledge of web development really helps my design process, as I have a realistic view of the creative possibilities and technical constraints. I want to make long-lasting quality stuff that is expressive, inventive and, above all, useful.

Development

I love building beautiful stuff, especially when there are technical challenges. Usability, accessibility and standards-based front-end development are an integral part of my work. I like learning new techniques and keep up-to-date with the latest developments in the field. My main technical skills are HTML5, CSS, JavaScript/jQuery, PHP and MySQL.

Example process

1 → Discovery & ideation

I like to learn everything about your organisation with my fresh set of eyes. We discuss the goal of the project, and may already come up with some first ideas.

2 → Design

I'll provide mockups and prototypes. We'll discuss the designs together, so you'll understand the design decisions and can explain them to other stakeholders.

3 → Build

You sit back and relax. I'll pick the best approach to bring the design to life - and with the best tools.

4 → Launch

You'll have a project ready to share with the world. I'll give you the materials to showcase your story.

My background

Way back in 1999 I hand-coded my first website, and in 2003 I did my first client project. Since then I’ve been developing myself continuously, studying graphic design at The Royal Academy of Art and computer science at Leiden University. I like to work for governments, startups and non-profits, and regularly team up with independent creative professionals like myself.

I occassionaly organize programming workshops for women because I think it’s important to decrease the gender gap in IT. Read more about the workshops here.

I share an office space with other creatives at Elke Dag Vers. Apart from my work I love music, good vegetarian food, going on long hikes, cycling and rock climbing. In a previous life I used to be a DJ.
